We are thrilled to discover that new author to JdM, Allison Rocca has been shortlisted for Hardie Grant’s Ampersand Prize 2024!

Every two years, the team at Hardie Grant Egmont throws open the doors for the Ampersand Prize and puts out the call for manuscripts by unpublished writers. The Ampersand Prize aims to find brilliant debut novels by writers of young adult and middle-grade fiction, and this year Allison’s MG manuscript The Little Folk of Woolaroo Creek has been shortlisted!

Her novel is about an 11-year-old misfit called Joey, who finds a sense of belonging when he meets a little hairy creature, from Aboriginal storytelling. It is folklore from debut author Allison’s First Nations upbringing, and she has permission to share this tale as part of an engaging and eclectic story for children.

The winner of the Ampersand Prize will be announced on 11 December, and will receive an advance against royalties and a publishing contract from HGCP.

Congratulations to Allison and all shortlisted authors!
