McIver’s debut sold to Hachette AU and Tinder Press UK
July 08, 2019
Hachette Australia and UK publisher Tinder Press (part of the Hachette Livre UK Group) have jointly acquired rights to Ruth McIver’s debut novel ‘I Shot the Devil,’ via Jacinta di Mase Management.
McIver’s entry of the same name won the 2018 Richell Prize for Emerging Writers, which requires entrants to submit the first three chapters and a synopsis of the proposed work. The novel is a dual narrative following a journalist in 2010 who is investigating a series of crimes in her hometown, alongside a memoir from 1994 written by one of the town’s residents who was close to the crime.
Judges described the novel as ‘a dark and unforgettable literary noir’ that showed ‘an emerging writer of considerable literary talent’.
The two publishers together acquired world rights in all languages, excluding English-language rights in Canada and USA.
‘I Shot the Devil’ will be published in ANZ in July 2020.
